, talking about the parents of hadiya pendleton and talking about the people of nourn. and now we're seeing the president make this plea in chicago. i guess realistically speaking from a political standpoint, how much do events like this accomplish? does it help him make this point? >> as we've seen, and you've watched it up close, the president's strategy is to go directly to the american people. you can't go to the city of chicago, even though you want to talk about opportunities, social programs, mental health services, increase in the minimum wage and all of the rest, you can't go to a place like chicago and not talk about gun violence. so what he's trying to do, i think, is say, look, this is not a rural issue versus an urban issue. this is an american issue. it's just one more way that -- he understands what the political odds are in congress for a ban on assault weapons. he gets that. but this is just one way for him to make the case to the american people to pressure members of congress and lots of them, by the way, as you know are democrats who are in districts where it might not b
has a home here. the 15-year-old hadiya pendleton was killed a mile from where his job is. the connection is very real for him. the gun violence rate is one of the highest in the country. the poverty rate in the south side of chicago where he will be speaking today, where he was once a community organizer, one of the highest in the country. we've been here a couple of days, talking to community organizers. they say the need has never been greater. so when the president comes here, politically the main thing is to give his message from the state of the union and put it on the ground where the people are and where the situations require it and, of course, south side of chicago is a place where urban violence is very much a foot. however, there's going to be the looming question, are you just giving your speech or are you going to make good on the promises here where you call home? a lot of people are so happy to see the president but they will be even more happy if these words turn into actions and help create opportunities for the kids they say will wind up killing themselv
the funeral of hadiya pendleton, the young chicago honor student shot dead in chicago just a week after she performed as a majorette in the president's inauguration parade in washington, d.c., just after attending the young woman's funeral this weekend, the first lady, michelle, will be hosting her mother, hadiya pendleton's mother as one of the guests for the president's speech. interestingly, a number of the democratic members of the house, democratic members of congress, i should say, both houses, have also announced that they have given tickets to the speech to relatives and friends of people who have been killed by gun violence. including relatives and friends of victims of the aurora mass shooting, aurora, colorado, and the newtown mass shooting from december, and the tucson mass shooting. former congresswoman gabby giffords and her husband will be attending as guests of her replacement in congress ron barber, who was gabby giffords' staffer and who was himself wounded in the tucson shooting. they'll also be guests of senator john mccain. gabby giffords' political action group, the gr

of a chicago teenager is at $40,000. there was a march saturday in memory of hadiya pendleton. the 15-year-old was shot and killed tuesday in a park with her friends. i want to bring in reverend al sharpton, host of msnbc's "politics nation." also president of the national action network as well. let's talk about hadiya first. recently got back from washington. she just performed at president obama's inauguration. for folks who don't know the story, who aren't familiar with this little girl, what can you tell us? >> 15 years old, honor student. as you said, performed at the president's inaugural festivities. went home, was on her way in a month or so to paris. and was killed. apparently standing under a petition that was, you know, there for weather. and someone shot her. there with all kinds of theories of whether it was mistaken for gang warfare. she clearly had no involvement in any violence in her life, no gang warfare. in fact, had done a commercial against gang warfare. and had a mother on politics nation. >> i want to play that for our viewers. take a listen. >> her friend who was t

the newtown tragedy to the hadiya pendleton shooti shooting, the 15-year-old girl shot in chicago, the president has made this very personal. at this point politically. what type of legislation can he realistically get through congress? >> well at this point not too much has changed on the hill since this issue began being raised at the beginning of this congress. right now universal background checks remain the one part of that whole agenda that really seems like the most politically feasible. what i found really interesting in what the president talked about on friday, though, he did bring that gun control message to chicago, a place where he obviously has a long history. >> yes. >> and has lived for many years. when he was talking about that, he brought the issue of newtown into it saying the number of gun deaths you'll have in the city of chicago would equal four newtowns a year and linked it to his personal experience of a son as a single mother, it's not just about gun violence in these communities, it's really about the issues of family. it's something that i think you saw
